View Full Version : [SOLVED] No menu bars in Unity (video card issue?)

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I can't seem to get Unity up and running. When booting in Ubuntu Unity, there are no menu bars at all. Desktop shortcuts do work though. Ubuntu Classic also works flawlessly.

I used /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p to test if my card would be compatible. It is.

I use the additional drivers (FGLRX) from AMD/ATI with my Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series card, in a Dell Inspiron 1764.

Any suggestions on how to get Unity working properly, since my video card should be compatible?

Thank you!

That's not a bug. That's a Feature! Check out
http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/features for a description of the new Unity desktop. Try clicking on the Ubuntu icon in the top left corner to get the "Dashboard" and click around in there to find some of the old menus, or search for the program you want.

It's not for everybody. I explored it for a couple of days, but then set up my login to boot the old Gnome version, with menus like they used to be.

Oh, if you are really not getting even the icon, or the "Launcher" on the left side of the screen, you might want to reinstall Natty.

Thank-you. There are no icons at all on the screen, not even when I move my mouse to the edge of the screen. How can I reinstall Ubuntu 11 without losing my personal files? I upgraded this install from 10.10.

Thank you.

Do you have icons on your desktop in "Ubuntu Classic" then?

Anyway, please see if this troubleshooting guide helps:

Reinstalling Compiz made the Launchbar appear. Wicked, thank you! How can I mark a thread as solved?
