I need to save something (from my browsers Chrome, Firefox) to the .gimp directory. However, I can't seem to get the save dialog to show me .xyz directories. Using Ubuntu10.04/Gnome2.3.

Did you try Ctrl+H?

I click on a link in my browser, a save dialog box comes up. ctr-H does nothing....

On FireFox, under the edit menu, hit preferences. Under the general tab do you have 'always ask me where to save files' enabled? If you do, when the save box comes up, you then hit save file. Then a box should come up asking where to save it. Browse to your Home folder, and click on a file, (just to highlight it), and hit Ctrl + H. The hidden files should show up. You can then browse to your .gimp directory.

No problem, Ubuntu always has funny little workarounds like this one. ;]
