After the upgrade, ubuntu will not boot with the latest kernel. i have to go into grub and select the previous kernel to boot.

That is not uncommon. It has sometimes been like this for previous releases.
There is nothing wrong in using an older kernel. Some day you will receive a new one in the updates, and then you can give it a try.

yeah i've dealt with this before, its really frustrating.
regardless, how do i change the grub so it automatically boots into the old kernel?
