Live inbox screenlet?

So this may seem like a ridiculous question - I'm looking for a widget/screenlet/app/thing that will display my gmail inbox on my desktop and kind of just hang out in the background. I'm not a big fan of it, but I'm yet to find anything faster than gmail's own client. Rather than leaving a browser open all the time, I'd like to have some "live" inbox on my desktop.

Is this possible? Any ideas?
