Lost GUI in 10.10 a while ago, will upgrade help or new install??

Hi, I lost my GUI and am only able to get the CLI or boot into graphics safe mode. I am wanting to move to Natty. I'm wondering if I should just do a clean install and that will fix it or will an upgrade do?

I miss Ubuntu.
