I just upgraded from Maverick to Natty on my desktop PC, and now the Unity sidebar and panel won't show.

I followed this thread :

http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com/search/label/Natty%20Narwhal

but none of the solutions worked.

Here's a screenshot of my desktop

Although the panel doesn't show, I can click on the appropriate places to open the shut down or volume control menus. No such luck with the sidebar. The shadow for the panel is also visible.

I had installed Unity on Maverick, and it worked fine, so I guess my graphics card (an Intel integrated card) does support Unity.

Also, visual effects such as window shadows and minimize-maximize animations etc. are working, so I guess the problem could be in some configuration rather than graphics not working?

I tried that but nothing seemed to work for me, so I simply did a fresh install of 11.04.

i was also having the same problem. No need for a fresh install. open ubuntu in your classic mode and then open compiz config manager. There enable the unity plugin and you are good to go.
