I have a Dell D510 laptop that I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed on and working fine. I got a message saying that 11.04 was out and opted to upgrade. I watched it download the update and all the files. It started the 'updating packages' process and it said it might take awhile, so I left the laptop on overnight and went to sleep. I woke up to a black screen. I shut the computer off, and turned it back on.

Now when it boots, there is no loading screen, just a blank screen that lasts about 20 seconds before displaying the logon screen.

There is a cursor but I am unable to move it with the touchpad or an external USB mouse. I select my logon name and enter in the password with the keyboard and press enter.

First error message: Could not update ICEauthority file /home/xxxxxx/.ICEauthority (select 'Close' to continue)

Second error: There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) (Select 'Close' to continue)

Third error: Nautilus could not create the required folders: /home/xxxxxx/Desktop, /home/xxxxxxx/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these foldersm or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them. (Select 'OK' to continue)

The cursor stuck in the center of the screen disappears and nothing happens. The wallpaper is there, but that's it.

I am new to Linux/Ubuntu and don't know the technical side of things (console commands, etc)

Is there something similar to the System Repair option in windows, where it will reinstall all the critical system files without deleting the user files?

I would just do a clean install, or boot to a live version and recover my files, but I stupidly enabled the encryption option for user files when I installed 10.10.

If someone could explain to me how to reinstall/recover the system files, or backup encrypted files from a live version or different installation, that would be GREAT!

Hi and welcome to the Ubuntu Forums

Unfortunately you've got a fairly tough question considering the encryption. The right people would need to see your thread to offer a possible solution.

In the mean time, have you checked to see if you can get any answers here?

You may also want to try some different boot options.

Also, you can bump your thread roughly every 24hrs.
