Desktop icon background

I'm using Gnome on Maverick and I wondered if it's still possible to put a background behind the text on a desktop icon. I know I used to be able to do that a long time ago but I haven't tried it in the last several years.

I like some of the lighter wallpapers but it's hard to read the desktop icon text on them.
