I want to join the #ubuntu-classroom this week. I've never used IRC before. I was wondering what client is commonly used. X-Chat seems to be talked about in the wikis. Firefox and Chromium seem to be the "Ubuntu browsers". Is there a "Ubuntu IRC Client" that most folks use? is X-Chat what everyone recommends?

I use the chatzilla firefox plugin, works great.

I mainly use irssi via shell, but it may not be ideal for someone new to IRC. If you're just cutting your teeth on IRC I would suggest X-Chat since it is fully featured and has some nice bells and whistles.

You can also access irc using any browser, on the following page:

http://webchat.freenode.net/

just enter you Nick and channel, in this case #ubuntu-classroom, and you should see the conversation start up.

xChat is pretty much the Linux equivalent to the Windows mIRC.

I would strongly advise either xchat or pidgin if you prefer to have a lot of other networks to chat in as well.

I don't agree with Pidgin. I've tried using IM clients as an IRC client, and IMHO never works out very well.

I like to use Konversation. Quassel and XChat are both pretty good as well though, I just prefer konversation. :)

Yeah, I'd guess Xchat is the most commonly used on Linux, and I recommend it, it's good :)

xchat is among the most common, but I have a preference for irssi.

I prefer WINE + mIRC. I just like playing around with mIRC scripts.

Occasional use - Webchat
For regular use - Chatzilla over XULRunner, and weechat

I used to use konversation but I've now switched to KVirc.

I'd sooner use pidgin's built-in IRC.

I find using IRC with pidgin more cumbersome that with XChat.

xChat is ok if you like clutter, but irssi is better if you like cleaner interface and like using terminal more.
I used to be a huge bitchx fan. But now I tend to use more irssi or pork.

This isn't the default theme. I'm working on a Natty theme.

I wrote my own... It's definitely not the most commonly used :D
IRC uses a very basic tcp/ip protocol, so it's very easy to write a client in most programming languages that support tcp/ip.

Some of the more sophisticated clients use alot more than the simple standard irc commands though, like for sending files etc and that's a little more tricky to program.

On linux I think it would be quite easy to write something in Gambas2 because it has a tcp/ip control, or if you did some reading, in java, python ot c but that would be a little harder :D

This isn't the default theme.

I attach my own effort which is the result of modifying somebody else's theme :). BTW I have a guide on these Forums if anybody is interested in using irssi:
