View Full Version : [ubuntu] 11.04 Beta/LTS - Access to second partition denied

Hi All, I'm an Ubuntu user but unskilled; can't find my way through an issue with the new distro.

My laptop is a STAMP, 1.6GHz, P4, RAM 1GHz, onboard Intel sound/video etc. There were two partitions, C:\ drive and D:\ drive. I had Ubuntu 10.10 and no other O/S installed.

I installed 11.04 Beta from a Live CD Alternate last week and have since upgraded a couple of times to what must now be the LTS. Lots of good stuff and it's why I'm a committed user. I have two problems:

In the install, I kept the two, almost equal partitions (each about 36GB) as well as the Swap of about 3.3GB. The previous format had been Ext4 and NTFS; I now reformatted and made them both Ext4.

The C:\ has of course all the system and apps, with the basic folder structure \HOME, etc. In trying to set up certain programmes to 'Save to' the D:\ - or indeed just trying to copy/move anything into it, I get: - "Error ... Access denied. Could not write to ... etc. OR ... etc does not exist"!

I've checked under the 'System/Administration/Users & Groups/ Users Settings/Group Settings. For Root, I've entered myself - who should have anyway had Administrator privileges. Also rebooted, but still no change.

What must I do to get use of my D:\ drive? Grateful for advice.

Adriano

It sounds like you need to enable the permissions on that partition using chmod & chown commands. I can't remember the exact commands, but they shouldn't be hard to find with a google search now that you know what you're looking for.

Your more than welcome to wait for a better answer. I'm just a little too tired right now & on my way to bed.

Dear Dutch,

I've had a quick look around on Google and decided I need to await something more from you! There are quite a few references to chmod & chown commands, but the contexts are beyond my limited knowledge and time to put that right!

Hope you can give me explicit action that I can employ. (Going back and re-installing may be an option - but it may just repeat!)

Very grateful again for your (or others') help on this.

Regards,
Adriano

This is what I used. It's toward the bottom, but you should read it very well.

Dear Dutch, - I was a bit delayed but finally got to http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/mountlinux, which appeared to be quite readable. (Btw, where the Guide sets up a new partition with mount point '/storage', my mount point is already called '/data').

However, I've come unstuck at the end - see my screenshot, where it says 'sudo: must be set uid root'.
Also when I re-open the Terminal with a new window, it says the same thing.

Further, both the C:\ and the D:\ have disappeared from the tree in my Dolphin file manager, leaving just the HOME/ directory, as have eg the Switch User options on the menu.

On re-booting I get (with a Red hazard sign) "Could not update ICE Authority file /var/lib/gdm/.ICE Authority". Then, "There is a problem with the Configuration server (/usr/libgcon/2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with state 256). Then "Could not apply the Stored Configuration for Monitors (Failed to open file. var/lib/gdm/config/monitors xml: access denied)"

I suspect something simple is behind this, but if resolving is too difficult, I'll just have to reistall from scratch. Hope you can guide accordingly!
