I have an asus m4a88t-v motherboard with the ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) sound card and I just did a reinstall and didn't have any sound so I reinstalled again to no effect. So I fought with ALSA and other bits of the Linux sound stack for 2 hours...
Then I found this handy piece of advice.

It basically says have you tried turning it off for 5 minutes.
Yep thats 2 hours I'm not getting back at least I had a movie on the other machine while I messed with it.
I wanted to vent and I thought you guys might want to know for the next poor guy with this motherboard.
