View Full Version : [ubuntu] Dell wireless install problem

Just installed 11.04.
Before install, during live cd preview, it detected my dell wireless card and offered to install a Broadcom (as I remember) proprietary driver.
However, after a proper install, it did not make the same offer and left no wireless available.
This is my first linux installation in years, so a bit of hand holding would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

wow...41 views and not one reply. It must be a really tough problem. Can no one offer any solution?

LOL... I have already gone through this EPIC journey, my friend.

So much trouble and frustration that I documented it in my blog (http://www.kevinharper.com/en/2009/08/28/installing-unbunt-on-dells-latitude-131l-laptop-is-impossible/)!

The part about wifi is at the bottom.

Not sure what Dell model you are using (may help to include that in future posts - be as specific as possible w/ hardware and model #s), but this helped me a lot http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=367898 as it was the exact same model of Dell laptop. It was a little easier for me than for that guy because I had a newer version of Ubuntu.

PS: I REFUSE to update the OS on that laptop. It continues to run 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

[CORRECTION]

I just checked and the laptop has 9.04. This means I installed it 3 to 4 months after it was released.

I checked because I remembered the mic currently works. There must have been an update in those 3 to 4 months that resolved the mic issue.

I spent days battling w/ 8.10 and both 9.04 installations. Hope my previous post helps.
