installation on a virgin drive

Hi I recently put in a new hard drive in my laptop as the previous one crashed and want to install ubuntu on it i installed it via a c.d it seemed to install fine but then when i restart it it says that it cant find the operating system ive have tried reinstalling it and it doesnt work is there any options which i have missed or something i have to tick off
note: the laptop has had windows on it previously

Maybe you need to go into the BIOS setup of your laptop (could be the DEL key, F2, F10 keys at startup) and make sure that your new hard drive appears in the boot list.
