how do you apply themes to unity?

Some of the GTK and Metacity themes @ Gnome Look will work in Unity 11.04 others won't. For me it was trial and error . I can't give you a list because I haven't tested that many . I was able to install by drag and drop or using the install button in appearance preferences like earlier versions of Ubuntu.

I imagine the difference in whether or not a theme applies to Unity has to do with whether or not it has a panelrc and how that's set up. For the themes that don't apply, what happens, exactly?

Themes that don't apply show as an invalid theme . I found Atolm , Krytaric , and every Metacity theme I tried , worked .

I put the entire panel on 'windows can cover' as a workaround. no idea, maybe its still in development. check the commit log if you know where the source is.

Lol, your the same as me. Staying with the LTS, but back porting apps, themes, and features. PPA's make staying current so easy that it doesn't make sense to upgrade ever 6 months.

After a year of using Ubuntu, I went to the original theme. It was from looking at how great it looked in Unity, and it's so complete. It's absolutely annoying that so many icon sets and themes are broken in some way. I also liked the global menu so I installed it on 10.10. My choice of gnomenu button isn't set in stone, but I think I'll use my amber colored gnomenu background just because it fits with the orange. I moved my gnome panel to the bottom and even with global menu it works quite well. The last change I did was move cairo dock to the right and change its view which works quite well. I added the window selector button since this image. Using the dock to switch between windows was annoying (a la Mac style).

Mind the tear on gnomenu, taking screenshots with it open is weird.

plasma by itself is pretty light.and no iirc you would just install plasma-desktop package, not the kde packages.

This. I've found better experience in raw Plasma Desktop than in GNOME, but that might probably be me since I already have a pre-configured GNOME desktop, and Mint's custom starting button takes a while to load, adding more to the load speed penalty.

That and the inclusion of the oxygen-gtk engines is a good bonus, the default QtCurve just... doesn't seem to fit to everyone's tastes :P. I had to warn though that Nautilus sometimes replaces your desktop background with some settings (I don't know what but sometimes when I launch Nautilus in KDE I can see the desktop icons appearing and my conky disappearing, the desktop background being overridden by Nautilus's settings).

Probably Nautilus is painting the desktop, and it moves above the background.
It used to be possible in the settings of nautilus to get it not to draw the desktop.

You can edit the nautilus launcher and add "--no-desktop" iirc to set it not to draw the desktop.

re: Using Nautilus not drawing the desktop (in KDE or Xfce, for instance), there's no need for gconf-editor or the --no-desktop switch, though both are also easy solutions. In a terminal, just run
gconftool-2 --set "/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop" --type bool false

Confirm it by running
gconftool-2 --get "/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop"
Terminal should report back false. WFM.

-edit- You could also run this for good measure...
gconftool-2 -s -t bool /desktop/gnome/background/draw_background false &

These will persist into a Gnome session though. nautilus --no-desktop is probably best if you boot into Gnome sometimes.

It's easy, you just need to do a script like this:

#!/bin/bash

sleep 10 && conky -c ~/.conkyrc &
sleep 11 && conky -c ~/.secondconkyrc &

Then add it it to you startup list.

Cheers :cool:

Sure. The best explanation is for me simply to attach everything and let you check it out. 2.4.4. I don't know how new is it though.

But do note that Audacious defaults to the GNOME interface rather than the Winamp-ish UI starting version 2.4.0, so since you might have been running Audacious still with the Winamp UI on, you might have not noticed that. But at least the GNOME UI is more functional than what I had back in version 2.3+...

Heh, couldn't pay me to use windows, sir. Using ubuntu 10.04 lts with blackbox. The wallpaper is a forkbomb which makes a function for the builtin "do nothing" , launches do nothing as a pipe into do nothing which forks the process again in the background which in turn repeats itself exponentially. Thus an unpatched system will completely freeze. so again, do not use it, unless of course you like screwing up your system.

What's that player? ncmpcpp?
I've played around with some CLI players, but the only one I got to work is cmus.

The other guy who replied is right, its MOC, quite a nice player, feels like a file browser which was what I wanted really, the only annoying thing is it doesn't seem to order them based on their track number in the tag but rather based on their file name, so I've had to go through and add the track number to the start of the file name.

You are really a freak. :)

Cant imagine that's a compliment, but the smiley face doesn't make me think you're insulting me either?

That resolution is good enough for me! Thanks for being kind enough to share, let alone offer to re-render it. :)
I really like it, it has enough visual interest without being over-colored or gaudy. And its defiantly not boring like most of the other minimalist/conservative wallpapers I've been seeing around here lately. :P

Thank you very much! Another fellow pm'd me for a different resolution so I also have a 1920x1080 version if needed by anyone here: http://ompldr.org/vOGw3dw.

What terminal are you running?

xterm + tmux (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tmux)

Try it, it's awesome!!!

Looks like moc to me.

Thanks. ;)

Turns out I have already tried that one, but I didn't change the horrible blue background, that's why I didn't recognise it.

Cheers :cool:

Kinda sh*t, this one. Limiting myself to a web-safe palette isn't working out as well as I'd hoped.

Will try better next time..... or fail further

Looks great to me.
