That is how it is supposed to look (honest).
Click on the 'Activities' in the top bar to start using the system.

It should be black, by default (or all mine have been). Isn't yours Mr Hedge?
You can install ccsm and in the Unity Plugin field play about with the transparency of the top bar. I'm not sure if that will help you.

I loaded a bunch of different themes and the color of my top bar is (i think) paisley right now.
If that what the OP was asking about, that the top is 'glass' like rather then a solid color? If so then that it may not how it should look. There are many themes out there, I don't know for sure...
I was thinking the OP was stuck on a 'how to operate' Gnome Shell question.
I think it is time for a 'Hedgie Power Nap'. Before I do serious damage...

The problem is probably the catalyst driver. I've had the same issue on both ubuntu and arch. I've managed to get the top bar right by installing kde, logging into kde, logging back out and then opening an gnome3-session, for some reason the top bar is black again after I do that (I've also done this on both ubuntu and arch). Another thing you might try is using the open source drivers, they're good enough for gnome 3 effects, but gaming will become more difficult (xonotic worked fine on highest settings, but using the oss drivers I can't even launch trine or shadowgrounds because renderer initialization fails).

You can force gnome3 to fall-back to using gnome-panel and metacity doing this:

But if you break it you own it!
Also a lot of the old panel applets will not work yet:
