Current status: I am mid install of 11.4. With GParted (not install) I took my dev/sda3 (Windows D drive) and made an extended partition which somehow came out ext4 and ~2GB swap which seems fine. Using the install options I didn't succeed at an extended partition which is the reason I went to GParted. I started install and seem to have stalled in Keyboard Layout. The file copying progress bar is at ~80%. It says "Ready when you are" but the forward or backward buttons don't work. Used space in the target stayed constant at 3.91 GB. I have no idea of how to proceed.

I got to this point in thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1744710 and I thought that I should start from scratch with a new thread.

Actually I didn't get that far. I had an instance of GParted open that I closed. Immediately after that I found a dialog querying me about the keyboard. Either this dialog was merely hidden or somehow GParted interfered. At any rate I have Ubuntu 11.4 and Win7 running satisfactorily. Many thanks!!
