Due to having an onboard video card (Dell Integrated Chipset or something like that) on my E1505 Inspirion laptop, I've always had problems getting Ubuntu to recognize the resolution properly.

I managed to fix it by adding a new output mode with xrandr, but now the wallpaper is corrupted:

I'll also add that I'm not using the laptop itself, but an external Acer monitor and the new resolution I added was 1680x1050.

Does anyone know how to fix this so the wallpaper isn't displayed twice?

You also have a problem with the panel. What should be at the right, isn't. What is the output of xrandr now?

xrandr shows that the system still thinks both LVDS1 and VGA1 are connected. And there is no offset for VGA1 so it is overlaying LVDS1.

LVDS1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 60.0*+
800x600 60.3 56.2
640x480 59.9
VGA1 connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 473mm x 296mm

What have you done already? I've worked with making both monitors work but not telling the system to disregard one that exists.
