There are many users out there who don't like the autohide on the launcher, including me. There is a easy way to get rid of this, making it look more like a giant Iphone/Ipod touch.
Note: this is my first how to so don't judge this so much.
Now to the how to:

Go to the unity dash (click on ubuntu icon or press windows key)
type in 'config' without quotes. Click on 'configuration editor'. Expand 'Deskop' and then click on 'unity' or 'unity 2D' depending on the version of unity your running. Keep on expanding all the options until you find a folder named 'launcher'. Click on the checkbox next to 'use_strut'. Finally, click on the ubuntu icon, and from now on, it won't autohide.

Enjoy, and don't forget to give me feedback on my first how to.

Or just set "CompizConfig Settings Manager -> Ubuntu Unity Plugin -> Behaviour -> Hide Launcher" to "Never", isn't it?
Like in the screenshot here:

Yes, that's correct.

A good resource for any new Unity user is The Power User's Guide to Unity (http://castrojo.tumblr.com/post/4795149014/the-power-users-guide-to-unity), by Jorge Castro.

Edit: point of fact, I think I'll put that one in my sig, as well. = )
