Hey all,i want my ubuntu 10.10 to be updated to the new version. But,before updating i would like to know few things such as should i need all my software's to be installed once when i upgrade to the new version.

I have oracle installed in this 10.10..So,will upgrading to the newer version needs the installation of Oracle again?

Someone kindly guide me about these things

Thanks in advance!!

several answers:

no need to worry about your apps/settings

as so many people are installing/upgrading natty, the servers are very (too) busy and that give some hard time & index errors, so if you can wait a few days its better (and you will get some more fix)

Yep,I will wait..coz in the initial days of the release there may be some minor problems..

Thanks for the reply

Before upgrading, do the following:

1. backup all important data

2. backup the list of installed software:

3. read the release notes:

4. check hardware requirements for Unity:

Any other things apart from these..why coz I can't risk loosing my installation software's like Oracle and important data

It sounds like an important installation. Why do you want to upgrade?

Now is the time to switch to 10.10, not away from it.

@mörgæs:Just to experience the new features of Ubuntu...Do u think staying with Ubuntu 10.10 is well enough?

If you want to experience the new 'features' (I call them bugs) of 11.04 , I suggest you install it on a machine that isn't a production machine. Many people, myself included, have found Unity to be a very bad experience. Even if it worked as designed, the interface itself is not to my liking. 10.10 IMO is as near to perfect as a distro can get.
