Is it possible to hide applets in Unity?

Is it possible to hide/remove the default applets from the panel in Unity. In particular, the MessagingMenu and MeMenu. I do not use either of them, so I see no reason for them to clutter the panel.

In the attached image I placed red x's over exactly what I am trying to remove. Any help is always appreciated.

hide - probably not, though you can remove some
in synaptic search indicator-
indicator-me is your name one, indicator-messages is probably the envelope
