View Full Version : [SOLVED] 11.04 - GNOME ok, KDE hangs

After a V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W download of 11:04, I've got GNOME working fine but KDE (my preferred one) is hanging on the splash screen. I've tried with out the splash as well but it still hangs.

For some idea of when it hangs, it's just before the KDE icon appears on the default splash screen. The system isn't completely dead though, as the Kubuntu sound comes through as I would normally expect. However, I'm left viewing the partially completed splash-screen and a mouse which moves. Nothing else :(

Any ideas gratefully received.

Many thanks

I have also problem when login in, it freezes after login more times than it succeeds. I googled it, and it seems like other also have the same problem.

Same here :-(

Everything appears fine according to xorg.log and syslog (no errors at all) but just fails to complete the logon (desktop effects switchover?).

Have upgraded on a "HP Compaq 8100 Elite SFF PC" desktop with Intel onboard graphics successfully but failed on a Acer Aspire 5630 with Nvidia GeForce Go 6 series. All KDE4 settings are the same (nfs network home directory).

Also tried launching using "startx" in case it was a kdm issue....no go either.

I have exactly the same problem on my laptop - Asus A6Km with NVidia GeForce Go 7300.

Edit: I've noticed that kde is actually loading, i.e. after 15-20 seconds i can for example hit alt-F2 and start any application. After that i can see that the mouse pointer changes when i move it, for example it reacts to window borders (displays the resize symbol) etc. The windows are there but i just can't see them ;)

Some logs below (not sure if there is anything more useful than that - please let me know if there is and i'll post it):

For info, I have a nVivdia ge7200. There seems to be a common theme here or is it coincidence.

This bug seems related:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/772019

according to this one needs to disable desktop effects. I'll try this and report later.

This bug seems related:

according to this one needs to disable desktop effects. I'll try this and report later.

This works:
1. Start your kubuntu system and switch to any text console, for example <Ctrl><Alt><F1> and log in
2. Install ubuntu-desktop

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
3. Reboot and start Gnome session ("Ubuntu classic")
3. Go to "System Settings" in the "System" menu
4. Disable desktop effects
5. Logout and start KDE session

There's a way to do this from the console without having to install ubuntu-desktop. When your KDE session hangs, type <Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1. This will get you to a console.

Log in, then type:

vi ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc

In the [Compositing] section, change

Enabled=true
to

Enabled=false

If the Enabled statement isn't there, add

Enabled=false
to the [Compositing] section.

Then, restart.
