so now that Ubuntu has moved away from 2.32 i have one question
How long will Ubuntu maintain this?
I mean how long will it be until logging into this environment just generates errors because it conflicts with everything that has been given unity compatibility?
I ask this as i despise unity & do not want to have a pc that resembles a huge netbook!

In 11.04 Unity sits on top of Gnome 2.32. In 11.10, Unity will be on top of Gnome 3. There will be no "classic" session in 11.10, the fall-back will be Unity 2D. You will also be able to use Gnome-shell.
Gnome 2.32 will work on 11.04 for as long as 11.04 is supported (18 months).

I guess my next venture is trying to upgrade to xubuntu
unity will have no place on pc because it is designed for netbooks & touch screens (which i do not have) and seeing as gnome & canonical would rather turn their backs on us lesser mortals who require NORMAL desktops NOT monolithic clunkiness
XFCE is now top choice for me
how can canonical call unity good enough to be default when there are only a handfull of settings options & even then these are forced in compiz which does not even work correctly with unity is totally absured & not well thought out at all
in a year i can see me moving away from ubuntu all together

sarcastic advert alert:
Do you love netbooks?
Do you want the same fucsionality on you PC as you have on your netbook?
Then you need Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop Edition
The distro to provide you with a total conversion for your PC
Here a Cannonical we strive to force changes on you & so this time round we decided to just rename the Netbook Remix edition, Test it on a PC & then release it as a full Desktop release!
It is great & we love it

I've been trying for a couple of years to get my mother to use Ubuntu (and linux more generally) and she's getting there. But I think she's going to *hate* Unity. For me, for my mother, and for most people, simple functionality with logical menus takes precedence over a bit of visual bling. I've not tried Unity yet, but from what I've seen of the screenshots and from what I've read it looks pretty pants.
However, I looked at some screenshots for Lubuntu and Xubuntu last night. Lubuntu uses the LXDE desktop which I think is the lease mature of the main desktops, but is simple and elegant. XFCE though looks very swish whilst retaining the look and feel we've all come to love. So I'm actually thinking of making the switch to Xubuntu.
But also, I'm thinking about finally getting my installation of Arch Linux up and running. I had made a start with it about a year ago, but couldn't be bothered to finish it. I may now just do that!

It is possible to install the package xubuntu-desktop from ubuntu 11.04, and you will still be able to choose at login Xubuntu or Unity (Ubuntu). I have a machine that is currently set up this way. There are a couple things to sort out, but it works great. Xubuntu is nice and clean, stays in the Ubuntu family with the wonderful rich choice of packages, and you can still keep up with developments in Unity from time to time.

thnx laterails & Teachop for the responses
it was only last month i began getting my wife used to Ubuntu & at that point she had seen unity in netbook remix & she just hated it.
I told her to try to use it (netbook remix) and 2 weeks ago i replaced it with normal ubuntu.
Now due to cannonical epilepsiy i will have to 'retrain' the wife again to use an alternative
now cannonical & gnome have ignored the initial responses to when they released Gnome-shell a year ago & everyone said noooooooooooooo this is not good & so they promptly everyone ignored their userbase & have put this horrid monolithic desktop bling as default
xubuntu first then look else where methinks

Yeah, I meant to mention in my post about installing Xfce side-by-side with Unity, but forgot! So that's a good shout teachop. On my desktop I have Gnome and KDE installed and choose between them at start up. So yeah, I'd definitely do that. Also , I'd look into the Lubuntu desktop (lubuntu-desktop in the main repos) - I showed screenshots of LXDE to her last night and she liked the look of it. Maybe your wife would go for that?
