I have 3 users set up for desktop use. Only I have sudo access. Any of us can log in and at first it is possible to log out and return to the users menu and log in again. After more than one user is logged in and some programs run, logging out leaves just the background on the screen and stops any response to the keyboard or mouse. Logging in by ssh is still fine and samba is still doing its stuff. Shutdown has to be via ssh or the power switch. In the past I have been able to kill some processes (via ssh) and recover control but not for a long time now. Even shutdown by ssh wouldn't work for a while but I found a gconf policy thingy allowing shutdown and restart which seems to have cured that. The workaround is to not log out - just switch user and finally shut the whole thing down. I have an older box that I upgraded over the years from ubuntu 6 to 9 without having this problem so I suspect Meerkat and/or the x64. ... Any ideas/pointers welcome TIA :)
Perhaps I should add that I am using gnome as standard install.
