Unity is not running when i log in, instead i am presented with the same 10.10 desktop: Applications, places, and system.
I upgraded from the CD, because my internet connection is slow and it would take forever with the update manager. If it is important, i used the new upgrade option on the CD.
my hardware is as follows:
pentium 4 cpu 3 GHZ
nvidia geforce 4 mx 4000
2 GB of ram

Can anyone help me with this?

Older Nvidia cards are known to have problems with Unity, that's why you get the fall back option.

So is there any hacks/tweaks I can do so I can get unity running?
I really want the new Desktop

Not that I know. You could try installing Unity2d from the repositories. It will become the fallback version for 11.10.

Thanks, works great, and unlike the development version (the unity 2d daily Repository) it shows the Desktop. It's faster than regular gnome, and it's stable. I can now make this my default session.

Also, in case anyone is interested, I have a screen shot of the interface.
Thanks again for the solution

IMO your hardware setup should be sufficient to run Unity. Before the upgrade, where you able to run Compiz (desktop effects)?

Check if the proprietary Nvidia driver is activated in "Additional Drivers".

If yes to both, you may try this workaround, maybe it affects your card, too:
