Hi

With 10.10 i had no problems with blenders latest version, however, after upgrading to 11.04, Blender 2.57 is in Chinese and Blender(Windowed) installing 2.4 version

Any help getting back to Blender 2.57 English version is greatly appreciated.

Though being officially released, 11.04 still has some rough edges. I would wait a few months before upgrading - or just stay with 10.10 as long as it is supported.

So can we switch back to 10.10 now that we've upgraded to 11.04? I mean, I got this pop-up
window earlier today wanting to install 11.04. Never got a pop-up like that before. You'd think
they'd wait until 11.04 was actually ready to be shipped...

Now I can't even recompile Blender because make can't find libjpeg.so....

If I could remove one and only one item from Ubuntu it would be the option to upgrade online. Take a look around in the fora these days see how much trouble it creates.

Back to the point: You can not roll back, only reinstall 10.10.

You could also do a fresh install of 11.04. If the Blender problem still persists, best is to open a bug report here:

+1 on this idea. The risk it creates even if the new release is stable but the servers are swamped is immense.

It also leaves so many users without a matching LiveCD/LiveUSB to do system maintenance or repair.

If you installed an updated version by compiling from source or just a binary installer then the package manager has no way to know that a newer version is installed. Hence it thinks that the one in the 11.04 repo is newer than what you have. This is always going to be a problem on an upgrade. One way around it is to to make sure you remove any packaged version using synaptic before compiling and or installing a newer version outside of the package system.

Thanks for replies.

Went over to Blender and reported this as a bug.

Noob to Ubuntu so no idea how to try what Campbell Barton suggests

Find it weird  that an upgrade to 11.04 would create a problem that never existed on a previous version of Ubuntu OS

Anyway, looks like it's either re-install 10.10 or use Laptop and Vista OS :(

An online upgrade can create a lot of trouble! I gave up on those many releases ago.

Until this bug is solved

I would recommend staying with 10.10. It is supported a year from now, so there is no rush to install other versions.
