I am running ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 on another, that are used as HTPC. What I am looking to do is set a sleep timer for them so that every night at 2 a.m. the machines go to sleep then auto wake up at 12 a.m. I know I can set the sleep command for them to sleep X amount of time but I would like to set it so that it does this everyday automatically and if possible wait if machine is in use.
can anyone help me?

Take a look in the software center , I remember seeing program that may help . It is called the Gnome Scheduler.
