Linux Mint is just a different flavor & it is based on Ubuntu. It looks a little different but works just about the same. At least up to 11.04. I don't think Mint-11 Katya is going with Unity...yet, I think they are going with Gnome-3.

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but adds in additional items, such as the ability to play DVDs right from the "box".

I install Ubuntu for myself, and Mint for family members. Since Mint has resolved a lot of little things people expect, I get better results this way.

Mint also adds its own value, such as the Mint menu, which replaces the Gnome menu.

The next Mint is not going to have the Unity DE, as stated above, and the Gnome 3 will implement a "classic" format, not the Gnome Shell.
