If you have installed the beta and done the updates then you probably already have 11.04. Speaking from experience, they don't generally release a tonne of new packages on release day.

However they will updated the website and have a new ISO for download... And users who have maverick will get the option to upgrade in their update manager. Unless anything has changed this time that's usually how they roll out the new versions.

I don't know how many people do this, but even though I have Beta2 installed I am going to wipe it out and install 11.04 release fresh and new. Yes I know I could do a dist-upgrade, but where is the fun in that? :D

I have 11.04 Beta 2 installed and will do a dist-upgrade tomorrow to get 11.04 final. My only dilemma is whether or not to install Gnome 3 again. I'd been using Gnome 3 on 11.04 for a while and decided to reinstall to get Unity back and as soon as I did I missed Gnome 3.....go figure :s

OOH! My first post!

Doing a fresh install is a good idea if that is an option. Sometimes breakage in the betas doesn't get repaired when doing an upgrade. Even upgrading from one release to another can cause breakage or there may be something that doesnt update fully.

For example, older versions of Ubuntu used the Ext3 filesytem. Later on ext4 became the default... But if you were upgrading from an older version with ext3 it wouldn't automatically give you ext4. You needed to either re-partition youir system or do a full re-install to get the ext4

I will be removing 10.10 and getting Windows ready for dual boot later . I won't try an upgrade ,there are to many horror stories and I don't want a mixture of two operating systems. Since we are all in different time zones I'm not sure what time the release will come .

And how is Gnome3? I was reading the Gnome blog about G3 support on Ubuntu, and saw a lot of problems with it mainly with applets and indicators.

So, about ~22 hours?

But I do remember that maverick Meerkat was hot-delayed few hours for a problem with the iso cd (problem booting on some configuration)

I think I'll wait a couple of weeks first then fresh install the 64 bit version (am currently on 32bit 10:10)

I have to say though that everytime I tried Natty on my USB stick I never once got that left sidebar dock

There really isn't a set time for release, the best thing to do is check the ubuntu-announce (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-announce) mailing list, for the official release announcement, there will be many different sites saying Natty has been released, but they will usually have a link to the daily build for the 28th, and not the final release.

I jumped the gun, too. Even though this is my work computer. I waited until a week ago, and figured that most of the death-dealing, data-eating, soul-stealing bugs had been worked out, and I could handle the occasional window opening sideways on a second monitor that's turned off, and stuff like that.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. Waiting for the artists to start rolling out the eye candy, but Unity is great. In my opinion. Which is worth what you paid for it.

Solid as a rock since beta 2.

No more updates, this is the release.

Quite happy with it's performance, Unity is great.

Just a few minor bugs to clean up.

Got bored of waiting and updated to 11.04. I guess because I updated rather than fresh install, some of the settings which should be default weren't, and some don't make a lot of sense.

Two quick issues.

1)I got rid of Rhythmbox, yet it's still appearing in the sound menu (except it just has a little cross next to it). How do I banish it from this menu?

2) The shortcuts menu is all wrong. It has Chromium as my 'choice' for 'Browse The Web' when Firefox is my default browser (so want 'browse the web' to open FF4, not Chromium). And the 'Listen to music' option opens Totem (or is it just called 'Movie player' now?). Anyway, I want it as Banshee. How do I change these?

I just tried the Fedora 15 live cd and am comparing it to 11.04. Haven't had time to decide which one I prefer. I sure miss the 'Applications' menu on both and also the 'Places' menu.

The OP was 12 hours ago, and says that it's going to be released 20 hours after that post. So I'm guessing that Natty gets released in eight hours. 5:00AM in my timezone.

Considering that it was 8PM in your timezone an hour ago, and it's 9PM for me right now, we probably have the same timezone. So yeah, 5:00AM.

Well no, it shouldn't cause any problems. The difference between beta 2 and the final release is only really a few packages; it's like doing a post-release-update in that there's not a lot of change.

To the OP: Get in now before the rush. Download Beta 2 or the latest daily build, and then run Update Manager to make sure it's fully up-to-date. The daily build should pretty much be the release version anyway, as I haven't had any updates for a few days and here it's now the 28th.

When they're sure that there are no critical showstopping bugs, and the final CD image has been sent successfully to the official mirrors, and the torrent has been started, and the release notes are in-place on the server, and the additions to the website to announce Ubuntu 11.04 are uploaded... that's when Natty will be released.

The process of uploading to the mirrors takes a variable amount of time depending on a lot of factors. There's no set time; when the servers are ready to get this additional load and there's a Download link on the main website, then it'll all be put into motion.

That's why I've been suggesting to get the beta or daily build NOW before the rush.

On the contrary, the process you describe above is why people should wait until AFTER the rush to upgrade.

Of course, though I suggest this, I upgraded Monday night on account of impatience. Though, save for a configuration issue with VirtualBox, my upgrade process went rather smoothly.

so far so good, only a few minor annoyances... i think the "applications" and "files and folders" launchers on the launcher are annoying and unnecessary, and i don't like the hiding menus. other than that, i am a fan of unity and i look forward to watching its continued evolution.

Last night I broke down and setup a VM of 11.04 Beta 2.

I have to say I'm genuinely impressed with Unity, and I think what Shuttleworth and co. are doing is extremely cool.

That being said Unity is a rock solid DE for netbooks and touchscreens, as well as casual users. I don't think anyone should even give this a second thought. However, for power users like myself this release does give me some pause for my "Desktop."

Specifically many menu's and functionality that were previously easily accessible, now require some additional work. While it's honestly not that much more, I do think some additional development will be needed to further hone the GUI just a little bit more.

But it sure is pretty, and I can't wait for the official release today to play around with.

Umm, you can do a command line install and do whatever you want. Just because ubuntu doesn't ship with gnome 3 doesn't mean you can't run it. ):P

No, I'm not. Everyone that is running 11.04 (beta) updated, already has the final version. Nothing magical happens when it's officially released.

dont anyone here know the time?? if yes, please tell me..i am eagerly waiting for natty for the past 2 months

Sorry, don't know the exact time of release, going by past releases it could be another 8-10 hours yet. The release usually pops up at 2-4 am the day after advertised here (my local time- I would expect to see it early on the 29th April, being in Australia).

As soon as iso images are posted to a server, someone usually posts the news in a thread like this one. Keep an eye out here.

I've uploaded over 300 copies of 10.10 ):P

Excellent work there wolfen69 :)

No it's not,I've just checked. Honestly, why don't we all go and do something else for a few hours? Perhaps we should ponder on the future prospects for those with older desktop pcs that have no 3D graphics. I thought Gnome 3 sounded an interesting alternative; but tried it on Virtual Box only to be nagged again about my pc lacking 3d capabilities. Will 10.04 be the last Ubuntu I can run?

how you may consider "ethical" such script:

It depends on your graphics card. If your graphics card does not have 3D acceleration, Ubuntu will default to the GNOME Classic Desktop.

If the card is present, you will be booted into Unity.

If you don't have the appropriate graphics card; don't fear - Unity 2D is available from the PPA.

abcuser

i downloaded beta 1 and it did not have unity !! it was running gnome.
Install program tries to detect if your graphic card supports 3D rendering that is required by Unity. If it does not detect such graphic it installs "Gnome classic" by default. In this way if you would like to have Unity 2D (because you can't have Unity 3D) then you can install Unity 2D from PPA, for example: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-ubuntu-unity-2d-using-ppa-in-ubuntu-11-0410-10.html

Dunno why ubuntu say 32 bit is the right choice for most computers, just not true anymore
If you don't know which version you should install 32-bit or 64-bit then you just install 32-bit and it will work.

I still think a lot if not most of the computers are still using 32-bit systems. Sure if you are having a new computer you are having 64-bit computer, but I have Ubuntu on some 10-years old computer and running without a problem.

If you are technical enough and know that you computer is 64-bit you are safe to install 64-bit. There is no need for non-geeks to download 64-bit and install on old hardware and having problems.

32 runs on every machine, 64 doesn't ... Its for the people, that are not sure (don't know), to make sure the OS runs.

IMHO, if they don't know, if their machine is 32 or 64bit, it doesn't matter to them what the OS is, it matters that it runs.

Contrary to popular belief, AMD64 does NOT mean AMD only. It means 64bit for Intel AND AMD.

And now I got 2gb of RAM, so as you said I'll do a 32-bit version.
And will the inclusion of SWAP memory of another 2gb can any way make me eligible for 64-bit ?!

You can run 64bit version if you have less than 2GB of RAM. But if you have more than 3.2GB of RAM 32bit system won't see the rest of your memory.

Apart from that 64bit is somewhat faster but I doubt there are many applications that take full advantage of 64bit.

That depends on which server you have selected in software sources. They don't all get new version instantly. :) It takes time to propagate new stuff.

Well main server has the update ready (am already updating). If you can it's always better to do a clean install. At this point it's entirely up to you! :)

I dual booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu for a year and decided to get rid of Windows when the new Ubuntu 11.04 came out. So, I just downloaded it. Unfortunately, I cannot install Ubuntu, because of backlight issues on my Acer Aspire, same problem I had with beta2 (bot not with alpha ). Thought it would have been fixed by now. How come Ubuntu 10.10 worked fine and the new one doesn't? I'm going back to Windows 7 and uninstalling Ubuntu completely. This is so very frustrating. I was really looking forward to using it. :(

Sorry to hear that. Guess it has something to do with the kernel version (maybe an earlier version of the kernel was used in the Natty alpha?).

Oh, if this is strictly Kernel related then it's a regression bug and needs to be reported. My suggestion is to find another distribution Live CD with the same or newer version of Kernel. That way you will be able to see if it's Kernel issue or Ubuntu issue.

If it's Ubuntu issue you can report it but it's never a good idea to upgrade to newest version when it's released.

Yes it does, but I have a small bandwidth cap. If my previous ISP was reliable, then I would have a little more data to transfer each month. I'm seeding Xubuntu 64 and will do the same for the i386. I'm supporting XFCE, this time, for those treading water with legacy hardware.

Working on seeding ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64 and -i386. My goal is to have a ratio of 10 overall.

My upload speed is higher than I thought it would be -- maybe because it's my desktop rather than my laptop. I'm more disappointed about my download speed, it's not going much higher than 100 KiB/s.

( As soon as I say that, the speed spikes to 200.)

The petals are too rosy, which probably adds more credit to the conclusion, but I'm not sure.
