And what will people burn live Linux distros to when it does?

Who knows? Out dated tech can hang around a long time before it's not used. For now they are very much needed.

I don't waste cd's or dvd's anymore. I just use usb sticks

I personally don't use CDs or DVDs for installing programs or for live Linux distros anymore. I use USB drives and/or download programs from the internet. I only use CDs in my car because it doesn't have an ipod connection.

I'd rather they be phased out as soon as possible, I never liked the idea of optical media, too prone to scratches or damage from sunlight.

I guess maybe a good estimate of how much longer they'll last is to look at how long floppies lasted as a mainstream form of media.
