Do not know if in new versions of unity will change that, but I felt really miss having a desktop to test the new unity.

Not having the middle button click on the desktop, creating shortcuts and not being able to place widgets on the desktop is something I did not like the unity.

Do not like it, now the desktop only serves as a wall that can be decorated with images; I hope the developers of Unity put some use to the desktop = /

Hi!

A lot of folks like Unity!

I happen to like the "classic" look.

Have you tried classic?

System...admin..login....classic

Restart.

Desktop icons are back in 11.04. = )

One thing I've found useful, though, is to keep catchall folders for different kinds of tasks in your Nautilus bookmarks, to be pulled up from Places. Most of the convenience of desktop icons, but compartmentalized.
