Is there a way of getting gcc 4.6 without needing to compile from source?
I notice in the default repositories the latest version is 4.4 but I really need to use various features from c++0x that are not supported in this version.

If I do need to compile from source is there anything that I should be aware of in advance?

Any advice is greatly appreciated?

You could use Fedora 15 or Arch which come with 4.6 by default. If you want the latest software, Ubuntu isn't a good choice.

ubuntu 10.10 has a gcc-4.5 package, and 11.04 (released this week) has 4.5 by default. maybe these are good enough.

or there is the gcc snapshot package
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc-snapshot

or you may do better with a distro that has slightly more cutting edge software.
