View Full Version : [ubuntu] Can I pause and resume Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade?

I have a slow broadband connection (Virgin Mobile) and it has a tendency to stagnate or lose its signal and disconnect. I need to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 but I need 756 MB of packages for the upgrade and it ALWAYS loses its signal and disconnects. I can always tell when it's fixing to disconnect due to a series of symptoms (stagnating, and then downloads really fast for 4 seconds) so I was wondering if there's a way to pause the upgrade and then resume it (after disconnecting and reconnecting.) I found a little bit of information on this subject elsewhere on the net but it's really old. Any help here???

You might be better off to download the Natty install, make a LiveCD/LiveUSB, and then select the 'upgrade' option during the install.

I have thought about ordering a live CD in the mail but can I upgrade an existing Ubuntu installation using a live CD? I thought you had to download an alternate installation .iso

I just captured an image of the install options for 11.04 from the LiveCD/LiveUSB:

p.s. It mig be worth testing a download attempt of a natty ISO and see if you can manage to download it with your broadband service: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

OK cool, thanks for your help. This option must be a new feature because I've never seen this on other live CDs.

The upgrade option is new to me as well; it is a really nice feature.

Natty had really 'gelled' and come together nicely. I have has such good success with it that I changed from 10.10 to 11.04 as my primary OS. The upgrade was smooth as butter from the LiveUSB.

I have high hopes that others will have a similar experience (I do have the advantages of having installed it about 20 times in my testing of Natty!).

Happy Ubuntu(ing)
