Clean install.
Appeared to work fine.
Restart after install OK.
Ran Update Manager:
It started work on some 300-odd updates,
But froze when "Applying Changes" to the following package:
libc6-dev.

It was "Preparing to configure" libc6-dev,
But couldn't get any further.
The Update Manager window said it was at this point:
"Security Updates - User-space parcer utility for AppArmor"
Total freeze-up.

Forced restart.
Got to password screen OK.
Then to blank screen:
Regulation purple background,
Mouse working but nothing to click on.
Nada.

This is all most unfortunate. The computer belongs to someone I know. They were getting fed up with their other operating system. I suggested Ubuntu. I've got their laptop on a promise to set them up with Ubuntu. I don't have long. They need it quickly. I may have no choice but to give it back to them with their old operating system on it. Won't be any skin off their nose.

I did this twice with the same outcome.
Next morning, however, it has booted OK.
Update manager says the O/S is up to date.

But it doesn't work properly.
It has a =>Graphics Problem<=

ATI Radeon Xpress 200M
Extremely slow and jittery
E.g. Moving windows with the mouse

I've been scanning forums for an answer.
AMD appear to do a proprietary ATI driver download
But I couldn't find Xpress 200M among linux options on AMD site

Note: I was not given the option of installing a proprietary ATI driver
when I selected the Additional Drivers option
from Ubuntu's > System > Administration menu.

I cannot therefore install a proprietary linux graphics driver.

What a terrible shame.
I was replacing XP with Ubuntu on a machine
that belongs to someone I know.
They can't wait while I try and get the install working.
They have a new baby.
It is vital they have a working computer.
I shall have to revert the machine to XP.
What a terrible shame.

There's a bigger ==> Ubuntu install problem <== here:
It seems that there is no Radeon Xpress 200M Linux driver
(See: http://www.petitiononline.com/x200MLin/petition.html)
----
Elsewhere I'm told there is a working driver:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#Unsupported
----
Either way, I've got a life to live and can't spend my whole life trawling forums just to get an upgrade working. If there is a working ATI 200M driver, Ubuntu should have installed it. If there's not a working ATI 200M driver, Ubuntu should have told me before performing the install and saved me hours of trouble.
---
I've still got to get a working O/S on this computer and get it back to its rightful owner. It's going to have to be XP.

I've got a load of ATI driver links in case anyone's interested.

They're no good for me, really. Apparently, there's a proprietary ATI driver and an open source driver. I've no idea which one is one this Tosh after installing Ubuntu 10.10. I couldn't care less. It's just got to work from the off, man.

I would have posted the Tosh logs here, but the machine's not stable enough to allow me even to cut and paste them into a browser window. I'm typing this from another machine.

xorg.0.log had dozens of Radeon entries, but none related to what sysinfo says is the chipset on the machine: Xpress 200M.

I can't find out anymore because its crashed again. Just locks up. Mouse freezes. It was barely usable anyway. Like, I said, I've got to put XP back on it.

Thanks, Jopseph, but I had only a brief window. I had to give up on Ubuntu on this occasion. The update was done through the Update Manager.

The specs of the Toshiba Equium A100-549 were as follows:

Pheonix CME FirstBios Notebook Pro 2.30
ATI RC410MB+SV450 Motherboard (Goldfish)
Intel Celeron 1.3GHz
Fujitsu MHV2040BH HD
