I'm trying to install XUbuntu 11.04 on my eeePC 900A which only has a 4 gig SSD. The XUbuntu install is telling me I need 4.3 gigs in order to install. Did the system requirements change that much?

What are my options for getting Ubuntu or XUbuntu 11.04 installed on my 900a?

Was was just playing with Xbuntu 11.04 - fast and light.

Here are the 10.10 Xbuntu requirements:

Minimum system requirements
You need 256 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 256 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time.

To install Xubuntu, you need 2.0 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 256 (or even just 192) MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 512 MB RAM.

If 10.10 needed 2 gigs, the 11.04 will be not much larger. You should be OK.

The minimum requirements for Natty have been changed in the installer. You can see the discussion that led to this here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/745148

and the bug that was opened by someone (like you, like me) on a 4 gb SSD here

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/775124

In the 2nd link, there's an explanation of how to bypass this limit:

Run the live CD, press alt+f2 and type:
gksu gedit /usr/lib/ubiquity/plugins/ubi-prepare.py
Then on line 310, change "min_disk_size = size * 2" to "min_disk_size = size * 1.4"
Then run then Ubuntu installer."

Hope this helps!
