I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and would like to install Gnome 3. Is it safe to install Gnome 3 now or are there still many issues that have to be worked out? If it is safe now, where can I locate the instructions to install Gnome 3?

Gnome 3 is not finished yet afaik. It is not installable on 10.10 I believe, only 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

on the gnome 3 website it says it is rdy.
So when ubuntu 11 comes out we shouldn't install gnome 3?

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/11/install-vanilla-gnome-3-in-maverick/

But check the link included there:

https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/testing

WARNING - Make sure you know what you are doing. Using this and the gnome3 ppa could break your system!
So you need to know how to repair it using something like ppa-purge.

To use the included packages you also need to add the Gnome3 PPA
ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 (https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3)

And that link:

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3

This package contains packages from GNOME3 and their dependencies so they can be used in Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty). This PPA is EXPERIMENTAL and MAY BREAK YOUR SYSTEM. There is no downgrade process.

Also, if you check the filters on both of those pages, it shows packages only for Natty!

I installed GNOME 3 from source on my Maverick system. I used a mix of all the tutorials I could find on the Internet, and put the procedure here: http://uri.tl/25

It works fine now...and I'm getting used to the differences between versions 2 and 3 :)
