I have limited bandwidth so cannot upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 by downloading.
Have tried using the Alternative CD (and by mounting iso image directly)

sudo /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade

which launches the upgrade window - soon it gives a prompt :

Include latest updates from the Internet?

The upgrade system can use the internet to automatically download the latest updates and install them during the upgrade. If you have a network connection this is highly recommended.

The upgrade will take longer, but when it is complete, your system will be fully up to date. You can choose not to do this, but you should install the latest updates soon after upgrading.
If you answer 'no' here, the network is not used at all.Since I want to avoid having to download from the net I choose NO
After a bit it then errors out with

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. Is it possible to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 directly from the CD or iso
without net access ? seems like a simple request

Prior to upgrade attempt my synaptic is all up to date as per

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+question/109413

Is there a process to make sense of the logs created in /var/log/dist-upgrade/
which may help here ?

Check if you have all 10.04 updates with

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You can do the same in synaptic by pressing refresh and then mark all updates. You should be able to upgrade off line after this. That is one of purposes of alternate CD.

my workaround was to just get online then a fresh install of 10.10 (then upgrade to 11.04)

attempting an online upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 failed, due to too many
app/library installs outside of synaptic. Its calculating
changes during upgrade to 10.10 couldn't handle all the diffs.

I'm fine now on 11.04
