Can you post a link to one of these problem files? Also are you running 64bit Ubuntu?

Hi!
Have you installed restricted extras?

Try installing VLC and see if that can cope with your mov videos. VLC is one of the best media players and there is a Windows (and Mac) version should you want it.

Thanks for all your replies..Mine is a 32-bit O.S,One can't install too many software's.In windows SM player plays everything.So,is there anyway to get SM player working for the .mov extension..
For some file extensions SM player is giving only sound but no video and here is the case too with .mov extension..
Can someone suggest me how to make SM player working..
My filename is "0101 - About this Course.mov"

The problem is that 'mov' is a container for audio and video codecs, and there are several that can be placed in this container. Which is why it would be nice to see the file itself or even an analysis of the problem file with software like mediainfo...

you are missing mp3 codecs

sudo su <enter>
<put password>
apt-get install gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
<installation......>
exit
mplayer "/host/Downloads/SHELL SCRIPTING IN LINUX/VTC - UNIX SHELL SCRIPTING ADVANCED/Chapter 01 - Introduction/0101 - About this Course.mov"

Hmmm.... sounds a little odd, perhaps try either one of these:
mplayer -vo xv -demuxer mov "/host/Downloads/SHELL SCRIPTING IN LINUX/VTC - UNIX SHELL SCRIPTING ADVANCED/Chapter 01 - Introduction/0101 - About this Course.mov"
mplayer -vo x11 -demuxer mov "/host/Downloads/SHELL SCRIPTING IN LINUX/VTC - UNIX SHELL SCRIPTING ADVANCED/Chapter 01 - Introduction/0101 - About this Course.mov"
I believe the default demuxer is now lavf which is troublesome with some mov files... but if this does not solve the issue I am afraid I am out of ideas :(.

Hey,by following the above steps i can see the video.So,lastly what should i do in order to play that file with SM player.
Great news :). Firstly for the commandline player you should add the following to your $HOME/.mplayer/config:
[extension.mov]
demuxer=mov
and this will mean that whenever the commandline MPlayer runs across a .mov file it will use the mov demuxer rather than the default lavf. Have a look as well in this file and see if there is already something after vo=.... and consider adding your most successful setting there (from xv, x11 or others perhaps). On my own system SMPlayer appears to use this file as well and loads the correct demuxer automagically.
Hopefully you are a little less frustrated now as well and can enjoy your video :).

Hey the file which u said is empty,it doesn't have anything except this
# Write your default config options here!

Is there anything more to add?
[extension.mov]
demuxer=mov
Or the above things are enough

This should fix the mov demuxer problem, everything else should be right with the defaults. Perhaps you might thing about setting a vo=.... setting there but this might not be needed on your system. If necessary I would use:
vo=xv
unless you have a suitable nvidia graphics card...

Thanks you,now everything is playing..I don't have external graphic card..so,i think i will stick with the defaults

try to append at ~/.mplayer/config the ff:
[extension.mov]
demuxer=mov
ac=qclp
I had the same problem and it gave me a headache before. make sure you have atleast w32codecs installed from medibuntu.

following these two posts i got solved my problem as well. i was also getting this issue when playing vtc linux courses videos...
before i had ubuntu 9.10 and i could play all files flawlessly using Totem.. but now i have 10.10 and cant play with totem ... however i can play with mplayer now after following above posts... also before following the above posts i installed xine player in ubnutnu 10.10 and was able to play flawlessly..
i wish totem also plays it in 10.10 .. as i like that tooo much..
also vlc still only plays audio and not video of above files..
thanks
