This is my first posting. During the week I made an attempt at installing 10.10 on four computers, each installation of which has its own particular issues. At first sight, having never even thought about Linux until just a few days ago, ubuntu seems to be really great.

I've bought Ubuntu unleashed, 2011 edition, and this book looks like it'll be really helpful. Hoever, it does say that it's intended for intermediate to advanced users, and the installion does not cover things I needed to know when trying to do the installation.

There is no urgency for me to get ubuntu up and running, and I'm happy to play around with reinstalling and so on in order to get it right.

Am I posting to the right place if I'm stuck on any of these aspects of installation and initial configuration. For example, the two laptops can't connect by wireless, even though one of them clearly says that I am connected. One of the desktops doesn't have sound (the other doesn't have speakers so I don't know about this one yet), although under Windows 7 it doesn't work with Audacity or Elluminate anyway.

So, rather than immediately cluuter up the threads with questions that may have been raised and resolved on numerous occasions, I thought I'd make this general post first.

In advance, many thanks.

Welcome to the Forums and Ubuntu

Absolute beginner talk and General help are good places to as most of the questions. After installing always check System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers for possible proprietary hardware drivers.

Also I would recommend always installing with Internet connection (use cable). This way the install takes care of many things you other vise need to do manually.

Many thanks for your reply.Much appreciated. I installed as you suggested and have the drivers, etc. I'll go through the installations again, one at a time, and I'll note anything that I'm unsure about that I can't resolve myself.

Best wishes.

If you're happy to basically play around and experiment, you'll learn a lot. It's definitely the right attitude.
