Hi,

I am trying to install ubuntu desktop edition, but when it is nearing the end of the downloading phase, it says "Error: a file cannot be retrieved" (something along those lines) and all my time goes to waste. This has happened every time I try and download it.
I am using windows 7

Here is the log file.

Have you checked the md5sum of the downloaded .iso file?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

If that checks out ok, check the cd for errors (press any key at the first purple screen when booting from the cd/usb).

I am using Wubi to install and that is what prompted that error message. I am using a netbook that does not have a CD drive, and would much rather download it than use it through a usb

Have you looked in the Wubi Megathread (the second Sticky at the top of the page) to see if your problem is listed?

Yes I have and it is not listed. It is a problem that occurs before it is completely installed.

I tried kubuntu just now, and it gave me the same response...

It cannot retrieve the required installation files

That's not the wubi log file. It looks like some intel log from september 2010!?

Anyway... if you were using the wubi.exe from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer then there was a problem with that wubi.exe that was recently fixed (a few hour ago). It now points to the 10.04.2 version of wubi.exe. If you want 10.10 instead then you can get it from http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick
