Dear all,
sometimes after an upgrade I'm asked to restart my computer with
Ubuntu 10.04 in order to apply the updates.
The problem is that now I'm running some simulations on it,
so that rebooting the machine really is not the ideal for me.
I'd like to know if there is any way to avoid restarting.
Or, if not, if there is any way to pause the processes that need to be continued, save their state, restart my computer and restart the processes
from where they where.
Cheers, -Luca

Honestly, I don't believe that a reboot is really necessary in those cases, out of my own experience. Usually, you are required to reboot when a kernel upgrade happened and some more. I think they are just indicating that it may be an security advantage if you would do so, since those upgrades are always marked as 'security upgrades'. So, I think it's safe (not in security terms) to even run the machine for some more days, if you need to.

Greetings.
