I installed gnome-shell on my 10.10 ubuntu and it works fine.
However, I tried new live of Fedora 15 and it comes with much better looks (I think it's called gnome desktop).

Can I have something like that on my ubnutu 10.10?

The version of the Gnome Shell in the software center is an old version , that is why it looks so much different than the final release . I have found a PPA for 10.10 , but other users have said it is outdated and doesn't work . You could search it out and try it yourself . Being that Gnome 3 is new there may be a working ppa available soon .

I've found somewhere that it'll bee too much work to port it to 10.10, dunno what's true about it. I searched a lot but with same results - older look (I like newer much better, in fact I consider it much more usable)

I will only have 10.10 for about 10 more days and it has been a great release for me . I will probably wait for a while to see if I like Unity . I won't think about installing Gnome 3 until I read that it is fairly stable on 11.04 . I hope 11.10 have a stable version in the software center at least.
