I just noticed, in the bottom cloud 70 most searched for tags thing, that one of the tags is "dwarf fortress". Isn't that a sort of combo strategy and roguelike game? Could someone explain why people search for that so often?

Because it's amazing?

I know it is, but I was just saying those would seem to be more mainstream in the genre, considering when you say 'roguelike' people usually think Angband (or, "What the hel* is a roguelike?").
is there a dwarf fortress package for ubuntu, btw?

Roguelike is very dumbed-down version of dungeon crawlers of today, even more so than old zelda games. You'd think that more popular games would be up higher, but I guess it's because you don't need Xorg :V

I consider Dwarf Fortress a sandbox game, not really roguelike. It seems to be a primary source of inspiration for games such as Minecraft. (In my estimation, Minecraft introduces few original ideas.) Perhaps that can explain its popularity.

True. But the adventurer mode has roguelike elements about it. And I first heard of it on RogueBasin, the roguelike wiki.

Dwarf fortress is a strategy city building game. It has a similar... feel to minecraft- logical physics systems and everything. It has a 90 degree learning curve, but once you get it down, it's just... amazing. You should really give it a go. Oh, and also like minecraft, it runs illogically slowly for a game with such horrible graphics.

I know what a roguelike is. I was just imagining the reaction of 99% of my coworkers.

Have thay taken the mode where you play as a single adventurer out? That's what I was referring to.
Also, could someone answer my question? Is there a copy of dwarf fortress for Ubuntu? I can't really discuss it in depth until I've played.

If you are going to play this game, you are going to need help (most likely!), some great videos to get you started:

Also one would be wise to use this 3rd party utility which makes managing your dwarfs bearable (some might say they cannot play without it)

Enjoy!

You actually do need xorg for some roguelikes, dwarf fortress among them.
