That is in the News section at IMDB today.

She was a great partner for my all time favourite Dr. Who, Tom Baker.

I hope she had a smooth transition when she departed her body.

Sad news.
I watched her with Tom Baker when I was a kid and now my kids watch her 'spin off' series "The Sarah Jane Adventures" which fills in what she did after parting from The Doctor.

One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic.

One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic.

[edit:3] There is also the variable of "relationship" that exists. With Elisabeth Sladen, many people had built up a knowing of the characters she portrayed in TV series, during which She often bought emotional & mental stimulation to the viewers.

Also, a person will generally be more personally involved if they know or have been to the place where one or many have been killed or injured (impersonal relationship). /edit

I read somewhere that apparently humanity in general has a great deal of difficulty truly grasping & being able to relate to numbers larger than 100.

[edit:] I couldn't find what I read in the past but some may find this small number of posts on the topic interesting:

[edit2:] Here is a good read on the subject:

I believe Stalin mentioned ten thousand, rather than a million (plus, killing); either way, it's an over-parroted quote covering an obvious fact.

Thanks for the links, I'll read them. It's called the Dunbar number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar_number)

What I was trying to say was, an estimated 16,000 children die of starvation everyday and nobody knows or cares. But one rich movie actress dies at the age of 68 and it's a tragedy.

Yes that's true; I don't really feel anything for anyone dying who I don't know well. I'm not a bad person, I just don't understand people who do.

To be honest, if people felt the same apparent misery 16 thousand fold, they'd probably have a mental breakdown.

I agree on all accounts. I was just trying to get people to think.

EDIT: I also read both links, very interesting. Never would have guessed it was four.

An enormous number of people in the world actually do care & contribute one way or another to help.

Though if you look at the freely available videos (1 & 2) called Food Production & Population Growth, you can find that there really are some quite complex & difficult to handle ways to look at the subject of starvation:
