Ok, I've got about 2 1/2 months to get LPI level 1 certified. I've got a laptop with Mepis on it, and another desktop I put Ubuntu on. I'm thinking about getting the 2 exam preps from testking.com for LPIC level 1, has anyone used Test King before? Are they any good? Does anyone have some advice on what books to get or good websites that might cover the first level?

there's been 3 threads on the issue, no one here seemes interested or has any knowledge of such things i guess.

i am personally studying for the LPI myself and gotten some help.

You do need to know both the deb and rpm packaging systems.

IBM has a stellar guide to help out with LPI certificatios
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/lpi/index.html

the LPI itself links to some good practices
http://www.lpi.org/en/testprep.html

and i've been told that the LPI Bible is a must have book

Ok, thanks alot. One of the main things I want to find out is the quality of testking.com.

Test King is like cheating. They take actuall exam questions and you become a parrot. If your only objective is a pass then so be it.

Well, I'm getting this certification because I was told I have 6 months to get LPI level 1 and LPI level 2 certified or they will find someone else to do my job. Doesn't matter I have to do it on my own time, doesn't matter that my boss was 5 months late on getting this wrote up so I now have 6 months instead of a year. If you can't tell I'm a little bitter  .

I am to make people who hate certs mad. ;)

Just kidding, I posted my feelings about certifications a while ago here:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=896447&postcount=18

Basically, in order for me to learn something through and through, i need to set goals for myself. A structure to go by, and frankly i like the testing mechanism to see how well i've done. (even though i'm a horrible test taker).

Certifications, coupled with my degree and my experience i think will also help my resume. I might be open to the criticisms of certifications, degree, and experience, but i also get the benefits of all three together.

Frankly, i'm looking to open some more doors for myself and to get away from the Windows world. This isn't a matter of hating MS, or a want to never touch windows again. Linux just interests me a great deal. It always has, but i was too.. ignorant, incompent, and lazy to give the full effort to learn it in my past. So maybe if i get my LPI and RHCT, it'll ease my way into jobs of that nature a little more. I got a long way to go though i feel.

So maybe the combination of a telecom b.s., a LPI and/or RHCT, being a assistant sys admin for a large un-named corporation, and a system's admin/web developer/pc tech/help-desk all in one for a 60 person company.. will be enough for me to get my foot in the door in a direction i can take a bit more interest in, and work along side some people who share that interest.
