Hello everyone,

I am having a little trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04.02 LTS in dual boot configuration with WinXP on my old Toshiba M65-S8091 notebook computer. I downloaded and burned an image of 10.04.02 LTS to a CD and booted my notebook from the disc live, without any issues. So, I decided to install it to the notebook in dual boot with Windows. The installation went fine, I resized the drive partition from 100GB to 80GB for WinXP, and 20GB for Ubuntu (consisting of two partitions). After the installation completed I booted into WinXP without any problems.

So, I tried booting Ubuntu, but during the boot process a dialog box pops up saying: “There is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)” After clicking the OK button, the log in dialog pops up but there is text at the top right corner of the screen that says: “The configuration defaults for Gnome power manager have not been installed correctly. When I attempt to log in the configuration server error dialog pops up again after clicking OK the log in dialog pops up again.

I am not sure what I should do to fix this problem. What is the recommended course of action?

Hi and welcome to UF
I did a little google search for (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) and found a couple interesting things that might help.
There is a lot more on the subject, but I'll just post 2 links, one is a bug report.

Thank you for the reply Dutch. I guess I could have done some searching before posting. Anyway, I reinstalled Ubuntu and that seemed to fix the problem. Both operating systems are working well. Thanks again!

Well, hate to hear you had to reinstall to do it, but glad you got everything working good again.

The only thing that I can think of that was different between the first and the second installation was that during the first installation I chose to transfer the setting from the WinXP OS, or at least I remember something like that. While during the second installation, I didn't see any dialog asking me about transferring settings. I'm not sure, but that may have been the difference.

On a side note, I am very impressed how well 10.04.02 LTS is working on my old Toshiba notebook computer. This machine seems to have new life instilled in it! I have tried everything that I can think of and to my amazement, it all works! I installed my network printer without any problem, all of the function keys, screen brightness, touch pad disable/enable, etc work. I'm really loving this operating system!

Nice! If you're like a lot of us here, it won't be long until you want to give Ubuntu more space on your hard drive, if not the entire hard drive. :P

It's funny that you should say that, after discovering how well Ubuntu works with the stuff I normally do, I gave it more space last night. I started to laugh when I read your post Dutch70!

I'm really lovin' Ubuntu!
