My ubuntu was working well for the past few months, and suddenly my numeric keypad wont work now.
the num lock's light toggles, but there is no input on the screen while typing.

Go to "System -> Preferences -> Keyboard" and check
- "Layout" (above)
- "Keyboard model" and
- "Options -> Numeric keypad layout selection"

Greetings.

sorry. i was mistaken. the numeric keypad does respond, but only the keys that work when the Numlock is off. the mouse arrow moves on 4,6,8 and 9 that one. i tried toggling but the functions of the key remain the same, moving the mouse pointer.

i checked where you have directed me, default is selected. Plus i have been using it, it just suddenly stopped.

Obviously, you inadvertently enabled "Mouse Keys". Check in "System -> Preferences -> Keyboard -> Mouse Keys (tab). The keyboard shortcut to toggle those feature is Shift+NumLock.
