Is there any reasonable alternative to an iPod Touch that runs Android, without a contract? I understand that there is the occasional Android PMP (Portable Media Player), though they are not particularly good. I was wondering whether a non-contract smart-phone with wi-fi would work just as well as and iPod Touch would.

i'd say so, assuming there exists an android app that you could be happy with.

find a buddy that has an android phone or go to your local cell phone store and play around there, text some apps and see if you are happy.
any old android 2.1 or 2.2 phone on craigslist would do, or something like this (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13845_3-20040570-58.html) - paired with a large MicroSD card.
that would be my approach, anyways.

The Archos 43 looks very good. The only thing I do not know about is the reliability. I have had a bad experience with a previous generation of Archos tablet. Does anyone know whether they have become more reliable as a result of Android?
Thank you
