Tried installing this: http://stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Compilation_on_Linux
using these rudimentary instructions but blew up after trying the cmake commands...

Why don't you just install it from the repositories?

System>Administration>Synaptics Package Manager, search for it, install. ;)
