I tried something new today, to see how it would work for testing OS's.
I have a 60GB USB hard drive I had laying around that I used for backups, but I don't use it any more because I have a TB Drive for that job. I wiped the drive off and reformatted it to EXT4. I downloaded lubuntu and burn the iso on a CD. I then powered off my laptop and removed the internal HD from my laptop, put the CD in the drive, and plugged the 60GB USB drive in and powered it back up. Did a complete install on to it and rebooted. Boots as fast as my internal drive and now I have a way of testing other OS's as they come out without touching my HD.

You can also try this. (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=666267&highlight=install+iso)You will need 2 partitions;one for iso and second for actual install.
