Seeing as I am now using Linux/Ubuntu fulltime I've been looking for some books to learn the OS from top to bottom, as I did with Windows 7. I'd recommend (in order) these books:

1) Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Commands 2nd Ed -

http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Guide-Commands-Editors-Programming/dp/0131367366

2) Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for Ubuntu and Debian Power Users -

http://www.amazon.com/Ubuntu-Linux-Toolbox-Commands-Debian/dp/0470082933

3) Ubuntu Linux Unleased 2011

Ubuntu Unleashed 2011 Edition: Covering 10.10 and 11.04 6th ed -

http://www.amazon.com/Ubuntu-Unleashed-2011-Covering-10-10/dp/0672333449/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1302942142&sr=1-1

4) Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible, 2nd ed (a bit redundant with the first choice, but anyway . . . ) -

http://www.amazon.com/Linux-Command-Shell-Scripting-Second/dp/1118004426/ref=pd_sim_b_7

5) Linux Bible 2011 -

http://www.amazon.com/Linux-Bible-2011-openSUSE-Distributions/dp/0470929987/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1302942248&sr=1-1

Combine this with the forums, the ubuntu help docs and Google, and you are well on the way to undertanding and appreciating Linux, at least for me.

Thanks for the tips. I just picked up a brand, spanky new copy of LPI Linux Certification | In A Nutshell. Got it for .99 cents at Barnes & Noble. I don't plan on becoming certified but all the information I need is right there. Great, great little book. Between that & the man pages, this end-user has everything he needs.

Looks like a nice collection to have. Thanks for the links.

However, it would be very nice if someone could comment on the availability of their free versions or about their comparison with similar free ebooks like "Linux in a Nutshell" and "Ubuntu Handbook".

I also have an ebook about 1000+ Linux commands. It was basically a fast track guide to OpenSuse, but most of its commands are common to all distros. As far as I remember, it was found on some free site. So I am wondering if it is worth to pay for a book if a similar one (or a different version/edition of the same book) is legally available for free.

I've found this: http://tldp.org/guides.html But there doesn't seem to be many 1000 page detailed guides, if that is what you want.
